Ranjit Makkuni’s “Dancing in Her Light” is a soulful and melodic instrumental that takes us on a journey through the stages of love. The song describes the transformation of a musician in love, from the exciting passions of the first meetings of the discovery of one’s beloved, to the dopamine pulsations coursing through the veins of the besotted lovers, to the addictive possession of the idea of and the memory of the feeling of love, and in the lover, erroneously expecting the beloved to make up for one’s lack of inner happiness.

As the song progresses, it shows how love transforms the most prized feeling in the world into a ‘misery’ of relationship squabbles, and to the subsequent grieving that takes place that lovers take to re-discover their original free self; and in doing so, to re-assess understanding of the madness of love. The song highlights how what had initially seemed as enchanting had turned into an exact mirror opposite.

And, in this dilemma state, our musician hero returns, in the end, back to his spiritual roots, to ‘surrender’ and dispassionately witnessing the spectrum of different emotions of love, ultimately understanding the mind’s possession and need for acknowledgement as a form of Mahamaya, i.e., an illusion…, but an invisible subtle substance that animates this world!

The sitar’s strings guide us on a meditative path, as if the musician is taking us on a journey through the twists and turns of love. The sitar’s scales express the challenges of love through various dissonant notes, which are then resolved with the most beautiful harmonies. The Venezuelan perussions provide a perfect backdrop to the sitar’s melodies, adding a layer of depth and sensuality to the performance.

The performance is a testament to Ranjit Makkuni’s mastery of the sitar is evident in every note he plays and his ability to easily cross over from one genre into another.
